Investigative Report Writing

Join NCISS for an in-depth webinar with Tyler Burtis, CPP, CFCS, as he shares professional techniques and insights from over two decades in complex investigations with the California Department of Justice. Drawing on his extensive experience in major crimes and financial investigations, Tyler will guide attendees through best practices for writing clear, accurate, and compelling investigative reports that stand up to legal and professional scrutiny.

Our special guest speaker is Tyler Burtis, CPP, CFCS, who has served more than 20 years with the California Department of Justice, honorably retiring as a Special Agent in Charge, managing investigative teams and offices, in Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego.

Tyler worked extensively with Assistant United States Attorneys as the management level representative, on the High Intensity Financial Crime Area (HIFCA) Task Force. Tyler organized and facilitated several Culture of Compliance Symposiums, bringing casino executives and compliance professionals together to address regulatory compliance and money laundering issues in casinos. Tyler also served as the co-chair of the Casino Money Laundering Working Group. Based on Tyler’s financial crimes expertise, he was asked to present to the United States Attorney General’s Advisory Committee on Fraud and Financial Crimes. Tyler also served as the Special Agent Supervisor on a Major Crimes Team, where he investigated murders, kidnappings, torture, and violent sex crimes. Tyler authored the first murder investigation wiretap affidavit for San Diego County.

In December of 2020, Tyler formed Burtis Investigations LLC, specializing in sensitive and complex investigations, training, and consulting for major law firms, investment firms, Tribal, State, and Federal Government entities.

Tyler possesses a Master of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s College of California, a certificate in Strategic Management from Boston University (Senior Management Institute for Police) and is a Certified Financial Crime Specialist (CFCS) and is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) from ASIS International. He is also a proud member of CALI, WAD and NCISS.  In addition to presenting in his official capacity, Tyler spent almost two decades teaching undergraduate and graduate level college courses.
