New
Social Security Number Bill Introduced
Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has introduced a new bill to "limit
access to Social Security
numbers". The legislation has been referred to the
Senate Finance Committee. The Senator has had a long-standing
interest in restricting access to the numbers in order to prevent
identity theft. She
introduced another bill to limit access earlier this year, S-141, which was
referred to the Judiciary Committee and has yet to be considered. The
Legislative Committee will be reviewing the measure carefully as it could be
used as an amendment to other legislation during the last few days of
Congress. We'll post
additional information about the bill as
it becomes available.
Congress is currently expected to recess in early October in advance of the
November election.
Majority Leader Reid has indicated that the Senate will return
on November 15 to complete its business for the year. NCISS must and
will remain vigilant as many bills are considered with little warning at the
end of a Congress. |
