NCISS Legislative Committee Update - July 14, 2009
Colleagues,
Many PIs forget
that NCISS represents both private investigators and
security guard
companies. The
Employee Free Choice Act would substantially alter
the National Labor
Relations Act, which is the basic labor law of the US. It
would allow unions to easily force a company to unionize by
merely getting employees to sign cards saying they want to join
a union. Employers could no longer ask for a
secret ballot vote
by employees, who would be subject to coercion by the unions.
Worse, the bill would allow an arbitrator to set pay and work
policies if negotiations with unions failed. Our guard company
members have asked to be kept informed about this legislation.
President
Obama met with more than a dozen labor leaders for approximately
45 minutes at the
White House
on Monday afternoon.
The President was joined by Secretary Solis. There are no
detailed transcripts of the meeting. However, I spoke with a
White House Press
Office representative this morning who described the
meeting as a productive conversation about shared priorities
like creating jobs,
health care reform
and the Employee Free Choice Act.
It has been
reported by an unnamed labor official who attended the meeting
that President Obama told
the 13 labor leaders present that he remains committed to
passage of legislation making it easier to form unions, but he
did not offer a timeline.
It appears that there are still several Democrats who are
wavering on the Employee Free Choice Act bill which needs 60
votes to defeat what many expect will be a
GOP
filibuster attempt in the Senate.
The White House
Press Office has identified the following as attending
