Health Insurance Bill

Health Insurance Bill likely to affect Investigative & Security Professionals

Colleagues,

This past Saturday night the US Senate voted to consider health reform legislation on a partisan vote of 60-39. The legislation is far from complete, and should be on the Senate floor until at least Christmas week. Many of the proposed provisions will likely affect NCISS members both as business owners and personally in a variety of ways that have received a great deal of publicity.

The NCISS Legislative Committee is concerned with one issue that has not gained much public attention, but a concern raised by the Gun Owners Association of America. The Washington Post reported on Sunday that the association is objecting to a mandate in the Senate bill which would require doctors to provide gun related health data to the government. Also receiving concern is a provision in the Senate bill to encourage healthy lifestyles. The gun owners group fears this could end up causing higher insurance rates for gun owners and jeopardize the ability for some to obtain a firearms license. This provision could affect some NCISS members, professional investigators and security colleagues.

The Senate is out of session for Thanksgiving this week, but will resume consideration of the bill next week. The NCISS legislative committee will continue to keep you apprised of developments of this bill and the many other bills that may affect our members and colleagues.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Jimmie Mesis
NCISS Legislative Chairman
